Opera review: Luisa Miller

Oh what a missed opportunity! Luisa Miller is an early and rarely seen Verdi opera but the music is glorious with many hints of the magnificence of La Traviata and Rigoletto which the same composer wrote a couple of years later. The orchestra under the excellent English conductor Alexander Joel give an finely sensitive account of the music while the ENO has put together a terrific cast of singers who gave a magnificent performance. So what went wrong?
